Our guides give general information from the sources we cite. Your soil, crop and weather may differ, so test before you scale up.
Buying happens elsewhere
Products are sold through Shamba Mtaani, which has its own terms. Training and consulting are agreed with us directly.

About this site
Essentia Kanan is a knowledge, training and advisory organisation based in Nairobi, Kenya. This website publishes guides on compost and organic fertilizers, and tells you about our training and consulting. We resell products from other suppliers through our separate online shop, Shamba Mtaani (shambamtaani.com).
How to use the guides
- General information. The guides are for general information and education. They are not a substitute for a soil test, or for advice from your ward agricultural officer, KALRO or the research institute for your crop.
- Sources and limits. We cite our sources on each page and say where we couldn’t confirm a figure. Research trials were done on particular soils, crops and seasons, so results on your farm may differ.
- Test before you scale. Try a new input on a small area, beside an untreated plot, before using it on your whole crop.
- Safety. Handle manure, compost, chemicals and equipment safely. Follow product labels, protective-equipment advice and pesticide waiting periods. Wash produce, and keep raw manure away from food crops close to harvest.
- Mistakes. We work to keep the content accurate and up to date, but we may make mistakes. If you spot one, tell us and we will correct it.
Buying, training and consulting
Products
We resell organic fertilizers and inputs made by other suppliers. Orders, payment and delivery are handled on Shamba Mtaani under its own terms, not these. Our trust page explains what we look for before we list a product. It describes our aims and does not guarantee any product’s performance.
Training and consulting
The descriptions on our services page are an overview, not an offer. The scope, price, dates and any other terms of a training course or consulting job are agreed with you in writing before it starts.
Copying, linking and your messages
- Our content. The text, design and layout of this site belong to Essentia Kanan, unless we say otherwise. Sources we cite belong to their owners.
- What you may do. You may link to any page, and quote short extracts with a clear credit and a link back. You may print a page for your own use or for teaching, free of charge.
- What you may not do. Please don’t copy whole pages or guides, or pass our work off as your own, without asking us first.
- Links to other sites. We link to other websites for your convenience. We don’t control them and aren’t responsible for what they say or do.
- Messages you send us. If you send us information about your farm or organisation, we use it as described in our privacy policy. We will ask your permission before we publish your story or name.
- Fair use. Don’t misuse the site, for example by trying to disrupt it or break into it.
What we can and cannot promise
- As is. We provide the site and its content “as is”. We can’t promise that it will always be available, error-free or suitable for your purpose.
- Your decisions. You are responsible for what you decide to do on your land and with your crops. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses that arise from relying on the free information on this site.
- What this doesn’t change. Nothing in these terms limits any right you have under Kenyan law that cannot lawfully be limited, such as under consumer protection law, or any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Changes and governing law
We may update these terms. The date at the top shows the latest version, and continued use after a change means you accept it. These terms are governed by the laws of Kenya, and the Kenyan courts have jurisdiction over any dispute. We would like the chance to put things right first, so please write to us.

Can I rely on the guides as professional agronomic advice?
They are a starting point. Confirm important decisions with a soil test and your local extension officer, or book consulting with us.
Can I use your guides in my training or on my website?
You can link to them and quote short extracts with credit. For anything more, write to us and we will usually say yes if you credit us.
Where do I find terms for buying a product?
On Shamba Mtaani, where checkout and delivery happen.
What if I find a mistake?
